Drum on a ship? Check.
As most of our cast is based near Los Angeles, we don’t have many opportunities to drum in San Diego. But when we do, they’re way cool. The USS Midway, constructed in the 1940s, was the longest-serving aircraft carrier in the 20th century. It first served during the Cold War, and last served in 1991 to evacuate citizens after the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines. The vessel is now a museum that sits in the harbor of downtown San Diego. And we were invited to drum on the flight deck!
After a short rehearsal, we learned the event was a private party hosted by Aegis Insurance. This was a HUGE event! There were impressive light and decorative installations, plenty of food and drink vendors, and multiple live entertainment options. We first welcomed guests on the ground as they were shuttled in. Then we strapped on our gold, high-top sneakers with light-up midsoles (yes!) to parade in on the flight deck as the sun was setting. We brought attention to the stage to play a few more charts before passing the baton to a fellow drumming group. I’m happy to say the feedback was great.
